Dengue Fever (Part 1)

Friday 15th October, I was at my farm in Pedas, doing the mid-month stock checking. I left the farm around 6pm and drove home to Kajang. Whilst driving, I felt nauseate and my head throbbed. But, thank God, I arrived home safely. Hubby was still in Pedas. I took 2 panadol active fast tablets and went to bed. It was just 8pm. Two hours later, I woke up and my head was hurting very badly.... I felt cold and was shivering, my whole body was aching so bad.... I could not even stand up....

But I made my way downstairs to the living room where hubby was watching television, having just returned home from Pedas. He thought I was sleeping and did not want to disturb me. He felt my forehead and it was hot. So, he quickly took me to the ER at KPJ Kajang.

My hubby had to put me in the wheelchair because I was unable to walk. The staff nurse took my temperature and it was 39 C. I was examined by the MO who after questioning n examining me, told me that I had gastric. He prescribed some medicines where the nurse told me to swallow. The nurse could only find the vein to insert the 'tube' thing after their 3rd attempt. It was painful. Anyway, after about an hour or so... the MO asked me whether I would like to be admitted or to return home. I chose the latter, after all my ailment was only gastric. The nurse then removed the 'tube' thing.

Anyway, the next morning I felt a lot better. But around noon, I began to feel nauseate, headache, feverish and my whole body n joints aching very badly.... My son, Badruzzaman then called my hubby. My hubby told Bard to take me to KPJ Kajang immediately. So, Bard, Wahiduzzaman and Sofiyah took me to KPJ Kajang.

Again, I needed to use the wheelchair. A different MO attended to me and I requested that I be admitted and my physician Dr Ong to attend to me. I was taken to Room 451 (VIP suite) at KPJ Kajang on 16th October (Saturday). Dr Ong then came and took samples of my blood for testing. I then requested that if I need the 'tube' thing to be inserted, could he please do it and not the nurse!!

When the results came, I was dengue positive. I was shocked beyond words!! Damn Aedes.. where n when did it bite me??? Anyway, I was told that a Health Officer from the Jabatan Kesihatan will be interviewing me since I was dengue positive. She came and asked me where I have been about a week ago. I told her I was in Singapore. Hmmmm... Singapore... Really???

Doing tai chi reduces arthritis pain

THE CHINESE exercise regimen tai chi helps reduce fatigue and arthritis pain, a new study has found.

"Our study shows that there are significant benefits of the tai chi course for individuals with all types of arthritis, including fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis," said Leigh Callahan, the study's lead author.

"We found this in both rural and urban settings across a southeastern state and a northeastern state," added Callahan, who is also associate professor in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine.

The scientists used 354 participants in the study, recruited from 20 locations in the states of North Carolina and New Jersey.

The patients were divided into two groups. One group received the eight-week, twice weekly tai chi course immediately while the other group received it later.

Participants had to have any type of arthritis, be 18 or older and able to move independently without assistance.

However, they were eligible for the study regardless of whether they could perform tai chi standing or seated, Callahan said.

At the end of eight weeks, the individuals who had received the tai chi course were the first to shows moderate improvements in pain, fatigue and stiffness.

They also had an increased sense of well-being, and they had improved reach or balance, Callahan added.

The results of the study will be formally presented today at the annual scientific meeting of the American College of Rheumatology in Atlanta, Georgia - AFP-Relaxnews

The Right Workout (Exercise)

The Right Workout (understanding the correct way to sweat it out is important if you want to benefit from exercising)

GOING out for a walk is not quite exercise. Well, yes, it's exercise if you walk briskly at a pace of roughly 6kph for at least 40 minutes.

The first 10 minutes do not count, as that constitutes your warm-up. Well, yes it does if you are about 55. At that age, walking would be a moderate if not vigorous activity. And again, the activity should be maintained for at least 40 minutes.

In order for an activity to be considered exercise, there are three components that need to be fulfilled - type, time and intensity.

Type

It refers to the type of activity you are involved in. Going for a walk; walking the dog; running; gardening; washing the car; and exercising in the gym are all different types of physical activities.

In order for an activity to be considered exercise, it must meet the criteria of the two other components mentioned below.

Time

It's also referred to as duration. For the elderly and physically impaired, the duration can be as short as 20 minutes. For the general population, the duration of exercise should be no less than 30 minutes.

The duration can also be accumulated all day - meaning, you can break down your activity into three short durations of 10 minutes each and still call it exercise.

However, if you do this, the type of activity you do must meet the following component.

Intensity

For the activity to be an effective form of exercise, the intensity of the activity must be moderate to vigorous. There are a few ways to measure intensity.

One is through heart rate. Without being too specific and jargonistic, in general, moderate intensity would be between 110 beats per minute (bpm) to 135 bpm. In fitness language, that would be 55 to 75% of your target heart rate.

Another way to measure intensity is through the feel factor. Heavy breathing with light perspiration would be moderate intensity. Hard breathing would, of course, be vigorous.

With these three components, the last additional piece of the cog to the exercise wheel is frequency. Three times a week would be the bare minimum, frequency for exercises, together with the above three components in place, to be effective.

Simply put, for exercise to be effective in the long run for results or plain health maintenance, one should be working out to various types of activities with a frequency of at least three times a week, at least 30 minutes each time in duration for each session at a moderate to vigorous intensity.

With that, you would have fulfilled the FITT principle for exercise.

Having read this, do be realistic on what you can call exercise.

Is golf an exercise? If you actually do walk 18 holes and play without a caddy, yes.

Line dancing? Quite subjective here. If line dancing is fast enough to hit a moderate intensity, yes.

Yoga? Again subjective, but I say, not quite. There are some forms of vigorous yoga that do raise your heart rate. Most do not. Sorry, yoga aficionados.

Lastly, I would like to point out a fast fact on intensity that I mentioned. Perspiration is not a clear indication that your activity is intense.

My neighbour line dances in the open padang and says she perspires profusely. In Malaysian weather, you will sweat anywhere.

My brother-in-law perspires beads of sweat just eating curry fish head! And that's not exercise, bro! Get real.

GREEN TEA

GREEN tea is brimming with healthful benefits and enjoyed by millions all over the world.

But Japanese researchers say when it comes to protecting women against breast cancer, the cup is empty.

Motoki Iwasaki, from the National Cancer Centre in Tokyo, led a study involving some 54,000 Japanese women over five years to measure green tea's effect on breast cancer.

Regardless of how many cups of tea the women drank, no benefits were shown.

The study, published on Oct 28 in BioMed Central's open access journal Breast Cancer Research, was a follow-up to in-vitro and animal-based studies that have suggested green tea may play a role in preventing breast cancer.

That does not man brewing a pot of green tea is a bad idea. It's been prized for thousands of years for its healthful properties - like regulating digestive functions, lowering blood sugar, improving mental processes, regulating body temperature, and as an astringent and diuretic, among many others.

And modern-day scientists have long known that its high concentrations of powerful antioxidants are associated with preventing coronary artery disease, lowering cholesterol, and fighting other types of cancers.

Japanese researchers recently discovered that drinking fie cups of green tea a day could help women reduce the risk of developing stomach cancer by 20%.

Also, research has shown that green tea can strengthen bones, prevent tooth decay, and help with weight loss because of its calorie-burning properties.

Green tea is made from unfermented leaves and has a high concentration of a key antioxidant polyphenol - a catechin called EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate).

Antioxidants scavenge free radicals, damaging compounds in the body that can alter cells, cause cell death and change DNA.

In other words, we should drink up on green tea, after all. - AFP-Relaxnews

Laptop Threat to SPERM

Laptop Threat to SPERM (using them on laps may affect male reproductive health)

NEW YORK: Using a laptop computer as the name suggests may not be good for male reproductive health, according to a study.

And there is little that can be done about it, aside from using the laptop on a desk, said Yelim Sheynkin, a urologist at the State University of New York at Stony Brook who led the study published in Fertility and Sterility.

In the study, thermometers were used to measure the temperature of the scrotums of 29 young men balancing a laptop on their knees. Even with a lap pad under the computer, the men's scrotums overheated quickly.

"Millions and mlllions of men are using laptops now, especially those in the reproductive age range," said Sheynkin.

Within 10 or 15 minutes their scrotal temperature is already above what we consider safe, but they don't feel it."

According to the American Urological Association nearly one in six couples in the United States have trouble conceiving. About half the time this is due to male infertility.

Under normal circumstances, the position of the testicles outside the body keeps them a few degrees cooler than the inside of the body, which is necessary for sperm production.

No studies have yet researched how laptops affect male fertility and there is no strong evidence that it would, Sheynkin added.

But earlier research has showed that warming the scrotum even more than 1 degrees C (1.8 degrees F) is enough to damage sperm.

Through both general health and lifestyle factors such as nutrition and drug use can affect reproductive health, tight jeans and briefs are generally not considered a risk factor since people are moving around.

Holding a laptop on the knees, though, requires keeping the legs still and closed. After one hour in this position, the researchers found that the men's testicles temperature had risen by up to 2.5 C. - Reuters

Tanda 100 Hari Sebelum Mati

by Blog Oh Malaysia! on Tuesday, 02 November 2010 at 04:33

TANDA PERTAMA

Azab Bagi Wanita....

Azab Bagi Wanita

by Blog Oh Malaysia! on Sunday, 31 October 2010 at 18:32

Sayidina Ali ra menceritakan suatu ketika melihat Rasulullah saw menangis manakala ia datang bersama Fatimah. Lalu keduanya bertanya mengapa Rasulullah saw menangis. Beliau menjawab,
